Alternator Amperage Sizing Chart
How many amps do you actually need? Use the chart below to match your sound system's RMS wattage to the right JS Alternators high output alternator — 250, 320, 370 or 400 amps — then confirm the exact bolt-in fit for your vehicle with the Make / Model / Engine Size / Year search on our home page.
Alternator Amperage Chart (by RMS wattage)
| Your system (RMS watts) | Alternator | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stock replacement — no big audio, winch/fleet/work truck loads | 250 amp | Roughly double a typical 105–160A factory unit. Full headroom for accessories. |
| Up to 1,500W RMS | 250 amp | Daily-driver amp + sub setup. Add the Big 3 wiring upgrade. |
| 1,500 – 2,500W RMS | 320 amp | Serious build. Big 3 required; AGM battery recommended. |
| 2,500 – 3,000W RMS | 370 amp* | Big 3 required; second battery recommended. |
| 3,000 – 3,400W RMS | 400 amp* | Max single-alternator territory. AGM or lithium bank strongly recommended. |
| 3,400W+ RMS | Dual / triple alternators | See our dual & triple alternator bracket kits, or talk to a fitment specialist. |
*370 and 400 amp options are offered on roughly one in three vehicle platforms. Many engine bays physically max out at 320 amps — the options you see on your vehicle's product page are what fits. Need more than your platform's cap? That's a dual-alternator conversation: call (888) 245-3680.
The headroom math (why these numbers)
Amps needed ≈ (RMS watts ÷ 0.75 amplifier efficiency) ÷ 13.8 volts + ~70A vehicle base load
Worked example — a 2,000W RMS build: 2,000 ÷ 0.75 = 2,667 watts of electrical demand. 2,667 ÷ 13.8V = 193 amps for the audio system, plus about 70 amps to run the vehicle itself = 263 amps of total draw. A 320 amp unit leaves ~57 amps of headroom so voltage never sags at full tilt. Rule of thumb: about 100 amps of alternator per 1,000 watts RMS, on top of what the vehicle uses.
Guidance by build type
Car audio
Size off the chart above using your amplifiers' combined RMS rating (not peak/max). Every recommendation of 250A and up should be paired with a Big 3 wiring upgrade kit — the factory charge wire and grounds become the bottleneck long before the alternator does. Still choosing amplifiers and subwoofers? Our sister car audio shop at jsultimatesounds.com carries the brands to match.
Trucks, towing & fleet
Plows, winches, light bars, inverters and comms load an electrical system the same way audio does — convert the accessory wattage with the same formula. A 250 amp unit covers most work trucks; upgrade the charge wire with a Big 3 kit or a vehicle-specific battery cable kit from our Wiring Kits.
Polaris Slingshot
Bolt-in Slingshot alternators are standard catalog items — 2014–2019 (250/320A) and 2020–2024 (250/320/370/400A) — in Slingshot Alternators, plus a dedicated Slingshot Big 3 kit.
Marine, motorcycle & diesel
Marine and motorcycle applications are built to order — call (888) 245-3680 or use the site chat and a fitment specialist will spec it with you. For diesels we list a 12v Cummins high output alternator and heavy-gauge Cummins/Powerstroke battery cable kits; anything else, ask first — never guess.
FAQ
What is RMS wattage?
RMS is the continuous power your amplifiers actually produce — the honest number, versus "peak" or "max" ratings that can read 2–4× higher. Size your alternator from the sum of your amps' RMS ratings.
Do I need the Big 3 upgrade?
Yes, with any high output alternator. The Big 3 replaces the alternator-to-battery charge wire, the battery ground and the engine ground with 1/0 gauge cable so the new amperage can actually reach your system. Kits start at $99.
Will a bigger alternator hurt my vehicle?
No. Your vehicle only draws the current it needs — extra capacity is headroom, not force. What does hurt: an undersized alternator sagging below 12V at full volume, cooking its regulator and your batteries.
My vehicle only offers 250/320 amp. What if I need more?
That's a physical frame-size limit for your engine bay, not a catalog gap. Options: run a 320A with a bigger battery bank, or step up to a dual/triple alternator bracket setup — call and we'll spec it.
I'm running lithium. Anything special?
Charging voltage matters. We offer 15.5V and 16V regulator options for lithium banks (not for AGM). Verify your battery's max charge voltage before ordering — it's a selectable option on our billet line.
